Blue-and-white in Takao-san's Light (Blue-and-white Flycatcher)
Blue-and-white in Takao-san's Light (Blue-and-white Flycatcher)
Blue-and-white Flycatcher. 12x9. Watercolor, ink, gouache. 2020.
The Blue-and-white Flycatcher looks so much like the North American Black-throated Blue Warbler that from far away, I would have trouble telling the two apart based on plumage field marks. However, their behavior is remarkably different. The Blue-and-white Flycatcher sits straight and upright before flitting from its perch to snack a bug out of midair. In the light of Takao-san, a beautiful mountain outside of Tokyo, Japan, the blue of the male flycatcher glimmers in beautiful moments of green and yellow. The ambience feels special, as it should on a mountain with so many ancient shrines and pathways.
