Sockeye Salmon, also called Red Salmon, are a Pacific species that spend two to three years maturing in the ocean before returning to freshwater to spawn. The males develop large humps on their back and a large snout as they reach maturity. As they migrate to their spawning grounds, these dauntless fish do not eat. They must navigate waterfalls, avoid hungry grizzly bears, and compete aggressively for female fish before they can finally spawn. As the end of it all, depleted of energy, they start to decay from within. Their life mission complete, they become “zombie fish” and die. The Tlingit word for salmon is “gaat.”
