Northern Harriers exhibit stark differences between males and females. The females are a chocolatey brown, while the males are a pale, ghostly gray that has earned them the nickname “gray ghosts.” During fall migration, Northern Harriers can be seen passing over the hawkwatches along the Atlantic Coast. Because they are less likely than other raptors to become concentrated along migration corridors, they number of harriers recorded at hawkwatches is usually low. However, more harriers tend to be recorded at coastal sites as opposed to inland sites, like the lighthouse ghost in this painting.
